Do I need a visa label?

If you have applied online for a tourist visa, working holiday visa or student visa, you do not need a visa label in your passport.

If you have obtained an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) from the internet, travel agent or airline, you will not receive a visa label. The visa is stored electronically.

Change of passport but valid visa in old passport

If you obtain a new passport and you have a valid visa label in your old passport you may travel to Australia with both new and your expired passport. You simply need to present your old and new passport for boarding and entry clearance. The visa label must be intact (not detached or damaged in any way).

If you have married since you last obtained your valid visa label and your new passport is in your married name, you must also provide evidence of the basis for the name change. In this example, you will need to present your old passport containing the intact, valid visa label, your new passport and your marriage certificate. After your arrival in Australia you may approach your local immigration office to have the visa transferred into your new passport.

Transferring a valid visa label into a new passport

If you wish to have your valid visa label transferred into your new passport, you should send the following documents to the Visa Office:

your new passport containing at least one blank page

your old passport containing the visa label (if you no longer have your old
passport, please provide a brief explanation why not)

a covering letter explaining what you are requesting, including the return
address and your contact details in case we need to contact you i.e.
  phone/email

a copy of a police report noting that your passport has been reported lost or
  stolen (if applicable)
